Frequently Asked Questions

1. Am I eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply if all of the below apply to you:

-You are a U.S. resident.

-You are a cancer survivor between the ages of 21 and 39 at the time the application is submitted.

-You are not a financial dependent.

-You have not been funded through our main grant program three times (COVID Emergency Fund grants do not count towards this total).

-You were not funded during the Fall 2022 grant cycle. If you were funded during the Fall 2022 main grant cycle, we would ask you to wait until Fall 2023 to reapply.

Additionally, you must meet ONE of the following criteria:

-Finished with active treatment with no evidence of disease

-One year past planned therapy with stable disease, OR

-In remission and on hormonal therapy (such as Tamoxifen), in molecular remission and on long-term targeted therapy (such as Gleevec or Herceptin), or in remission and on immunotherapy

2. When are your applications available? Can I apply now?

Our Spring 2023 Samfund grant application opens January 26 and closes on February 22 at 5:00 pm EST. If you are looking to apply for the Family Building Grant, please check back in March.

We do not evaluate applications on a rolling basis. Instead, our applications are available twice each year, in the Spring and in the Fall. We open and accept applications for an approximately three-week long period each season.

3. What requests are eligible for funding? Samfund grants may be requested for the categories listed below. The dollar amounts shown are the maximum amount awarded in that category.

Main Grant:

-Car Payments ($1,500)

-Graduate Tuition, Continuing Education, or Vocational Training ($3,000)

-Cosmetic, Dental, or Reconstructive Procedures ($2,500)

-Egg, Embryo or Sperm Storage ($1,000)

-Rent/Mortgage Supplementation ($3,000)

-Single Bill Payment ($1,000)

Family Building Grant:

Expect Miracles Foundation does not fund business-related requests, credit card repayment requests, payments to friends or family members, weddings, vacations, or requests for help purchasing a car. Additionally, Expect Miracles Foundation does not accept requests for undergraduate tuition.

4. What if I pay rent or mortgage to my parent or relative? Can I still apply?

Yes, however, please note that we do not pay family or friends. We will still make payment directly to the payee (landlord or lender) rather than your relative or friend. If your name is not on the lease or mortgage statement, you may request assistance with housing expenses if that is a bill you need help with. If you are selected for funding in this case, we may need one extra piece of paperwork showing you live at that address.

5. What is the average grant size?

Main grant is typically between $1,500-$2,000.

Family building grant is typically between $2,500-$4,000.

6. What is Expect Miracles Foundation looking for in a Samfund grant applicant?

EMF is looking for applicants that can articulate:

-How their cancer experience has impacted their current financial situation

-How receiving a grant will act as a bridge between where a young adult is and where they want to go

7. How do I apply?

The application will be available on this page January 26

The application requires the following information:

-Basic personal and contact information

-Your current financial picture including monthly income, monthly expenses, assets you may own, and liabilities/debts you owe

-The completion of a Medical History Verification Form, signed by a licensed practitioner (e.g., doctor, nurse, social worker)\

-Tax forms for 2020 and 2021

8. How many people are funded?

Approximately 50%.

9. Why is this only for young adults?

Samfund grants have historically provided financial support to young adults trying to recover from the financial impacts of their cancer treatment. Young adults are an overlooked and underserved population that face a unique set of challenges as a result of their stage in life, with few other resources available to them. Many are too old to have parental support, and many are supporting young families of their own. They may lack seniority at their job, and whatever savings they have managed to accrue disappear quickly during treatment. The Samfund was created back in 2003 to help young adult survivors move forward with their personal, professional, and educational goals. Since joining forces with Expect Miracles Foundation in July 2019, the goals of our Samfund program remain the same.

10. Who can I call if I have more questions?

If you have questions about the application process, the best way to get a quick response is to email programs@expectmiraclesfoundation.org. You may also call our office at 617-938-3484.
