6th Annual Expect Miracles in Manhattan

Tuesday, February 4, 2020

On February 4, 2020 at Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City, NY, nearly 600 financial executives gathered for the 6th Annual Expect Miracles in Manhattan Event. Over 50 firms sponsored the event, and representatives from over 150 companies joined Foundation Sponsor BNY Mellon in support of cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

After sampling delicious food stations and creative cocktails, guests turned their attention to the stage for the event’s speaking program. Two members of The Foundation’s Board of Directors, Sandy Bolton from Bank of America Merrill and Ben Huneke from Morgan Stanley greeted the crowd and thanked all of our sponsors, guests, donors and partners for making the event such a success. Sandy and Ben also took a moment to remember two industry colleagues that we lost to cancer this past year, Kelly Newsome and Bob Glenn.

Frank Heavey, Executive Director of Expect Miracles Foundation, Sam Watson, Managing Director of Stewardship of Expect Miracles Foundation were welcomed to the stage. Sam and Frank reminded everyone the importance of the funds being raised at the event in support of the Foundation’s strategy of Cure and Care, which funds life-saving research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and helps young adults surviving cancer who are facing the financial impact of this disease. Heavey introduced Dan Lee, an industry colleague who shared that his mother is successfully fighting non-small cell lung cancer thanks to Tagrisso, an immunotherapy developed by Dana-Farber developed in part to funding from Expect Miracles Foundation. Dan’s mom is doing so well that she got to dance with her son at his wedding, and meet her new granddaughter, Marianne.

Watson introduced Jen Bolstad, a survivor of Breast Cancer, who shared that she struggled financially with medical bills after treatment. Jen was able to move forward and continue building her landscape architecture and urban design business when she received a $2,000 grant from the Samfund. Today her business is flourishing and she has done some building and recovery work in areas affected by Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Maria.

The evening continued with an overwhelming generous donation campaign that raised over $50,000 in five minutes and an exciting Live Auction thanks to the tremendous support from the crowd. Heavey returned to the stage to present the Expect Miracles Award, our highest award given to an individual who goes above and beyond to donate or raise significant funds for Expect Miracles Foundation and the fight against cancer, to Ben Huneke from Morgan Stanley. Next, Heavey presented the highest award given to a company The Foundation Award. This year the award was given to J.P. Morgan for its corporate leadership in advancing the mission of Expect Miracles Foundation. To accept the prestigious award, Brian Shlissel and Keith Slattery were welcomed to the stage.

Thank you to our wonderful guests, sponsors, partners and volunteers - YOU are the CURE and YOU are the CARE. You can check out and share photos from the event on our Facebook page.  We hope to see you at our next event, the 11th West Coast Classic Charity Golf Tournament on April 16, 2020 in Newport Beach, California.
